Lightning on the Nebraska Sandhills
Artist: Bill Reid
Lightning bolt between Arthur and Ogallala, Nebraska, on May 16, 2019. A high-based and marginally severe thunderstorm to our south was rather generous with the CGs, or the "cloud-to-ground" lightning strikes. We found a hilltop in the Sandhills with a decent view to the south. I set the long lens to 70mm and pointed it to the most active area with the lightning. Catching a good lightning strike is difficult during the daytime, especially if a lightning trigger is not employed! I just had to be quick, click the cable shutter release when I saw a flash, and hope that there would be repeated flashes. This method worked out on this occasion.
