Elephant Trunk Tornado – Campo, Colorado – May 31, 2010
Artist: Brian Morganti
When I woke up in Oklahoma City and looked at weather data, I knew instantly where I wanted to go...Baca County located in far southeast Colorado. While having lunch in Guymon, Oklahoma I could see the tops of a storm well off to our northwest with an incredibly long anvil that stretched for over 100 miles eastward. It was still fairly early in the day but knew I had to get our Tempest Tour group there as fast as safely possible. I intercepted the storm just south of Campo, Colorado and witnessed several small tornadoes off to the west, but the best was still to come in the hours ahead. I then followed this isolated supercell for hours as it very slowly drifted across the plains of extreme southeast Colorado. I watched in awe from a high point as the initial tornado formed rapidly from the very high base of this storm, and incredible sight for all to behold.
