Star Trails - Stove Pipe Wells - Death Valley California
Artist: Brian Morganti
Death Valley features some of the darkest night skies in the United States, and with many clear and transparent nights it becomes a stargazers paradise. I took this photo near Stovepipe Wells looking north towards the Grapevine Mountains. My camera was centered on Polaris, aka the North Star which lies almost directly above the Earths North Pole. If you were at the north pole, this star would lie directly overhead. Because of this all stars appear to rotate around this point based on the Earths rotation. Total exposure time for this image is 72 minutes.
