Bisti Badlands - Alien Eggs Moonscape - New Mexico
Artist: Brian Morganti
Bisti Badlands is a remote and largely unknown area located in far northwest New Mexico. It offers an amazingly scenic and colorful expanse of undulating mounds and unusual eroded rocks covering 4,000 acres, hidden away in the high desert of the San Juan Basin. I started my hike during the late afternoon and soon surreal formations were all around. There are no trails and the hiker is left on their own to follow the broad washes east to discover what may lie ahead.
I had several GPS coordinates marked for interesting geological features, but the main event for me was seeing the "Cracked Eggs" region...aka "Dinosaur Eggs" and "Alien Eggs". I lingered there close to sunset which meant walking out the final hour or so in total darkness. GPS and headlamps proved a must for this 7 mile round trip hike.
