After sitting in Hays, Kansas for hours trying to decide where I wanted to go, I finally decided to head east on I-70 towards central Kansas. When I was about 50 miles east of Hays I learned of a rapidly developing storm with a land-spout tornado that had formed---right back at Hays! I relocated to a high spot north of the interstate and could see the tops of the supercell well back to my west. I plotted an intercept course back towards the northeast moving storm and was able to intercept a large tornado near Waldo, Kansas. I then watched it transition through several stages, including this classic “drill bit” tornado firmly planted on the open plains of western Kansas.
