Tower Lightning - Sioux City Iowa - 4th of July, 2003

This was the first night of my chase trip in 2003. I arrived at my hotel late and went right to bed, but was soon awakened by thunder. There was a lot of lightning activity so I crawled back out of bed, got dressed and grabbed my cameras and headed back out on some back roads. I started noticing several radio antennas were being struck by lightning and decided to set up a tripod and see if I could get lucky on one of these strikes. It was raining and quite windy so I had to keep closing the shutter to avoid excessive movement in the final image. This was back in the slide era before digital, so I cringed at each failed shot and more wasted film. Finally I got the shot I was looking for with a spectacular fountain of lightning that was returned skyward immediately after the initial strike!
